Mullens notches 20th victory of the season with 81 Speedway triumph
Not even an engine swap could slow Tanner Mullens on Saturday as he continued his dominant 2025 campaign with a USRA Heartland Modified Tour (HMT) victory at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas.
What’s more, he had never planned to race in his home state at all this weekend.
When the Mod War 100 event, originally slated for Heart O’ Texas Speedway near Waco, was canceled, Mullens and his team elected to compete in a pair of HMT shows in the Sunflower State.
On Friday, Mullens was part of a 31-car HMT field at Kansas City, Kansas’ Lakeside Speedway for the first of two nights of racing. He qualified his No. 02 Modified with the quickest time in his group on the 4/10-mile oval and won his heat race from the pole. However, he hurt the engine during his heat and was forced to miss the 25-lap, $2,000-to-win feature.
With the engine swapped, Mullens rejoined the Heartland Modified Tour on Saturday at the 3/8-mile 81 Speedway, where he was one of 39 Modified competitors on hand for the Dalice Franz Memorial. He turned in a second-place qualifying effort in his group, then won his heat race from the pole for the second consecutive night.
Mullens started second in the $2,586-to-win main event and took the lead on the first circuit of the 30-lapper. He survived multiple late-race restarts en route to posting a 1.660-second margin of victory over Reece Solander. Third place went to Shadren Turner, Tyler Davis took fourth and Terry Phillips finished fifth.
Mullens’ win was his 20th overall this season and his seventh in eight HMT feature starts in 2025.
