Tanner Mullens
Tough holiday outing for Mullens
Over the Fourth of July weekend, Tanner Mullens raced both a Modified and a Late Model with results that were not indicative of his speed.
On Thursday, Mullens and his Mel Hambelton Ford No. 02 Modified team were part of a staggering 53-car USRA Heartland Modified Tour (HMT) field at Lucas Oil Speedway. Mullens qualified fourth in his group at the 3/8-mile “Diamond of Dirt Tracks” in Wheatland, Missouri, and went on to win his heat race. He started the 30-lap, $2,000-to-win feature from the pole and led all but the final circuit when Tyler Wolff passed him for the win. Mullens took the checkers just 0.519 seconds behind Wolff. However, the Mullens team received a controversial disqualification after the race based on a slider-angle rule open to multiple interpretations by tech officials.
After the disappointing finish in the Modified, Mullens hopped in the No. 02 Late Model the next night on the Fourth of July at Enid (Oklahoma) Speedway. The first night of the Sooner Late Model Series’ Lavicky Memorial brought 19 Super Late Model competitors to the 3/8-mile track.
Mullens drove from fourth to first in his heat and started the 20-lap feature from the top spot. After jumping to an early lead, he was forced to pull in with engine trouble and recorded a 17th-place result.
Mullens did not start Saturday’s 50-lap, $10,000-to-win main event.
