Tanner Mullens claims top-10 result in Spring Classic finale

A pair of $5,000-to-win Summit USMTS programs were on the docket for Tanner Mullens on Friday and Saturday as he traveled to Hamilton County Speedway for the 15th annual Spring Classic. He grabbed a best finish of ninth after contending for the win in the Saturday main event.

When the two-day show got underway on Friday, 26 USMTS Modifieds were in the pit area at the half-mile track in Webster City, Iowa, including Mullens’ Sandlian Iron & Metal Auto Salvage No. 02 ride. Mullens finished fifth in his heat race, putting him 14th on the grid to begin the night’s 35-lap A-Main. He was running seventh just before halfway when he broke a J-Bar and driveshaft, leading to a DNF and a 23rd-place result.

On Saturday, Mullens was among 28 USMTS competitors at Hamilton County Speedway. He again finished fifth in his heat when racing action commenced. He went on to win his B-Main from the pole and started 15th in the 40-lap feature. He had climbed to third with a handful of laps remaining when contact from another car on a restart led to a flat tire on Mullens’ machine. The crew made quick repairs and Mullens salvaged a ninth-place finish.

After the Spring Classic, Mullens is third in the USMTS National Championship point standings.
